Heaven and Earth: A Sacred Journey
The hugely admired VOCES8 Scholars join forces with VOCES8 for a concert of three remarkable works, conducted by Barnaby Smith: Missa Papae Marcelli by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Miserere by Sir James MacMillan, and the world premiere of Peter Gritton’s Requiem. Performed in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Palestrina’s birth, the majestic Missa Papae Marcelli is hailed as one of the finest polyphonic masterpieces of the Renaissance. Peter Gritton’s deeply personal Requiem composed in memory of his younger sister Lucy gives way to MacMillan’s Miserere, a tour-de-force of choral writing, blending plainchant and polyphony, inspired by the spirit of Allegri’s iconic setting.
