Filmed live at the iconic St Martin-in-the-Fields in the heart of London, VOCES8 welcomes the festive season with a programme that journeys through centuries of Christmas music, from Renaissance polyphony and ancient chant to much-loved carols and contemporary favourites.
At the heart of the programme are some of the richest traditions of Christmas choral music. Works by Handl, Praetorius and Cornysh sit alongside Britten's A Hymn to the Virgin, Howells' A Spotless Rose and Peter Warlock's tender Lullaby, my Jesus. Praetorius' Magnificat Quinti Toni weaves together Josef lieber, Josef mein and In dulci jubilo, while music by Philip Stopford and Sarah Quartel brings a contemporary voice to the Christmas story.
Familiar melodies complete the journey, from Veni Emmanuel and I Wonder as I Wander to Silent Night, before VOCES8 turns to a selection of jazz and pop arrangements. Intimate, joyful and filled with the warmth of voices singing together, This Endris Night celebrates Christmas through music both ancient and new.
